The Mirror of Me

Once upon a time in a far away land
A woman, inspired, took pen in hand
She heard and wrote, saw and wrote
It all began with just a few notes

Ideas formed over the course of time
Had filled the corners of her mind
Finally like sunshine that’s been locked in a safe
The door once opened, thoughts began to escape

She opened her heart and laid it all bare
What once had been hidden she wanted to share
Ideas grew wings, they learned how to fly
No longer just hers, they were owned by the sky

And when she stood back and observed the view
To her amazement she was looking at you
Her friends through the years, the thoughts of her heart
She never realized you’d had such a big part

Oh, she knew you were out there, that you had thoughts too
The things that she’d been through, nothing was new
Somehow you were separate, in spite of the lack
She’d felt it was safer to hold herself back

And now she could see, maybe you will see too
That you are like her, and she is like you
“She can’t know me”, you say, “our lives are apart”
But take a close look at your life and your heart

Remember the days? You felt so alone
Her daddy left too, and he never came home
You tried to adjust and never loose hope
But time doesn’t heal, you just learn how to cope

Still, you know what hope is. You learned how to read
She too beat the odds and planted a seed
Hope’s seed you have watered all through the years
The roots have grown deep, they’re watered by tears

And how about the day when you first held your son!
The joy of her life, she too held such a one
Time goes so quickly, your son, how he’s grown
Her son has grown too. Soon he’ll be on his own

And this is my story, I hope you’ve no doubt
I am the woman I’ve told you about
Once upon a time in a far away land
I, the woman, took pen in hand

And what I learned, on that day, in that place
Breaks the barriers of time and space
When I look at my face now, you know who I see
I see your reflection, the mirror of me
